Setting Up a Blog

A blog is kind of like an online diary that can be either public or private, and that you can allow other people to add comments to, if you choose.

Blogs have become immensely popular, both for private and commercial use. They're a highly useful and easy way to

  • Share information/expertise
  • Promote yourself or your organization
  • Start an online community

One reason blogs have become so widespread is that they are extremely easy to set up. You don't need to know any HTML, you don't need to know anything about setting up a website. All you do is go through a simple signup form and you're in business. Another reason is that you can start one for free.

Blogs are also search engine friendly. Search engines love to search and catalog blog sites. Some blogs have become immensely popular. (Which is not to guarantee your will.)

Here's what you CAN'T do with a blog:
  • ECommerce
You can't turn a blog into a store.
  • Have a unique design.
Many blog sites have nice templates. Some are even free. Or you can use a Web Design Generator like Artisteer.
  • Have a primarily visual site. You probably could, if you pushed the limits, and you can add images to a blog, but blogs are primarily designed to be verbal.
